  • Using PaaS Tools to Develop Connected Cloud Applications

Track1: Cloud Computing

Using PaaS Tools to Develop Connected Cloud Applications

The market for PaaS products is highly fragmented and it can be confusing for organization how to select the best technology for their requirements. The presentation will describe a taxonomy of different types of cloud computing services, going beyond the traditional model of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. We will describe different characteristics of PaaS tools that are available today, including how different tools implement functionality such as multi-tenancy, resource sharing, and deployment.

This presentation will show how PaaS helps to realize the benefits that the cloud promises, i.e. elastic scalability, rapid provisioning, minimum down time, faster time to market, and show how to create better transparency into IT resources and their usage. We will discuss key selection criteria that should be considered when evaluating PaaS tools and demonstrate the advantages of PaaS in a case study for a large aircraft manufacturer.

Highlights of this presentation include:

  • General definition of PaaS and description of different categories of products
  • Multi-tenancy, multi-language support, and resource sharing tradeoffs
  • The advantages of public PaaS vs Private PaaS and the importance of hybrid PaaS
  • What is DevOps and how does PaaS relate to it?
  • Comparing PaaS to traditional application development and deployment environments (e.g. Java EE, .Net)
  • Application development in the age of PaaS – what is different?
